This morning a colleague of mine went to work saying that she planned to give an earth shaking English class today. The earth shook here in Madrid at about 17.20 local time, I thought she had finished her class at 16.00 hrs.
Still, we had an Earthquake or Terremoto (Spanish) for real at 17.20 in Madrid,Spain. The earth shook and the building rumbled and wobbled – I heard a great crack come from the lift shaft – which I tested afterwards, I sent it up and down, empty, a couple of times. Then the postman unwittingly gave it the human test as he delivered my new book, “”Birdsong” by Sebastian Faulks.
When the rumbling and intense shaking began and stopped within seconds, my cats were scurrying around looking for shelter. It felt and sounded like a distant rumble that got closer and as it intensified the feeling was as if something was rising up from deep down below,in the earth.
When I lived in Seville there was an earthquake at 06.30 in the morning one spring time. It caused the buildings to shake and a few bricks dropped onto the street. I thought it was building work in an old house next door. I cursed them and fell back to sleep.
Lets hope there aren’t any after shakes and that was just a once in a while occurrence here in Madrid. Those smart people in labs didn’t know anything about it beforehand and once again Mother Nature is telling us that she’s pissed off with our behaviour here on good old Planet Earth.
